Many databases and digital services have expanded or opened access during this unprecedented period of library and school closures and social distancing. The Plain Dealer eNewspaper and Ancestry Library Edition, for instance, are usually only available inside of the library but can be accessed from home right now. Acorn TV is brought to you by RBdigital. Log in or sign up for an RBdigital account with your library card number and PIN, then create a free Acorn TV account. Your free Acorn TV account is good for 7 days. You will need to log in to RBDigital and then Acorn TV again for another 7-day pass. Flipster Digital Magazines

Flipster Flip to your favorite magazines from any location!

Flipster provides instant access to the magazines you know and love in an easy-to-read digital format!

To access Flipster, enter your library card number (if accessing outside of the library building), and browse available magazines. You can then click on a magazine to view it within your browser. You can access Flipster from a library computer, your home computer, your phone, or your tablet, as long as you are connected to the Internet.

The Flipster app offers offline viewing of downloaded content on your mobile devices. To download the free Flipster app, search the iTunes App Store or the Google Play Store for "Flipster - Digital Magazines".

Freegal Music

You don't know Freegal Listen Now

Freegal provides downloadable music from Sony Music Entertainment and includes music from labels like Arista, RCA, and Columbia. You can download five MP3 songs per week (starting each Monday) as well as stream music 24 hours per day.

The songs are DRM-free, which means you can play them on any device that plays MP3s, it's up to you!

How it works:

  • Go to Freegal.
  • Log in using your library card number (all characters, no spaces)
  • Accept the end user licensing agreement
  • Browse by category, or search for specific artists.
  • When you find a song you like, click "download now" and save it to your computer.

Gale Reference eBooks

Gale eBooks and databases has opened access to resources for student remote learning and information regarding COVID-19. WPPL already offers access to Gale eBooks and Kids InfoBits with your library card, but these additional resources may be helpful in learning from home. You may be prompted to enter with a password. The password for all is "open."

  • Kids InfoBits introduces elementary schoolers to database searching with easy-to-use resources featuring age-appropriate, reliable, curriculum-related content covering a broad range of educational topics.
  • Gale In Context: Middle School combines reference content with age-appropriate videos, newspapers, magazines, primary sources, and more.
  • Gale In Context: High School supports student papers, projects, and presentations while empowering the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills with content aligned to national and state curriculum standards.
  • Gale In Context: College offers interdisciplinary content that reinforces the development of skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

In addition, Gale has curated links to health information pertaining to Coronavirus/COVID-19.

Hoopla offers streaming movies, television, music, eBooks, audiobooks, and comics! 

  • The loan period for eBooks, comics and audiobooks is 21 days
  • The loan period for music albums is 7 days.
  • The loan period for videos (movies and television) is 3 days.
  • You can watch, listen or read up to 7 items per month.
    Note: WPPL has temporarily raised the limit of items per month to 50 in order to provide more content to patrons during the current coronavirus outbreak.

You can check out content from Hoopla Digital directly from our catalog as well.

You can stream titles instantly through your desktop browser or the mobile app. Apps are also available for popular streaming platforms. Titles are automatically returned and removed from your device at the end of the lending period.

Watch over 26,000 films on Kanopy! You can watch must-see classic film from The Criterion Collection, learn about every subject imaginable from The Great Courses and PBS or indulge in festival indie or world cinema sourced from award-winning filmmakers globally. Kanopy makes it easy to watch any time, to share and discuss films.

Kanopy Kids features a diverse selection of educational and entertaining content that ranges across Movies, TV Series, Animated Storybooks, Live Action, and Animated favorites. Play credits are not required to play in Kanopy Kids. Enjoy unlimited plays in our curated collection for kids.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Go to westlakelibrary.kanopystreaming.com and create an account.
  • Go to your email account to verify your email address.
  • Add your library card number (include all letters and numbers, no spaces).

Now you are ready to start watching videos!

  • You can stream up to 5 videos per month
    Kanopy worked with a number of their content partners to provide a selection of films credit-free until mid-April.
  • Once you press play on a film you will have 3 days to watch it (as many times as you like)
  • Play credits will reset on the first of each month
  • To enter Kanopy Kids mode, sign into your Kanopy account and select “Go to Kanopy Kids” from the menu

Apps are available for Roku, iOS, Android and more via the Kanopy website.

You will need to register an email address and password the first time you use this access. The same login information can be used for in-library and off-site access.

  • IN LIBRARY access: Register or log in when prompted.
  • Off-site access: Register or log in and redeem a code which is good for 3 days (72 hours) of unlimited access to NYTimes.com and the New York Times app. After 3 days, you will need to log in and redeem another code.
